One of my most favourite parts of Christmas is making our own DIY decorations. Over the years we have built up a great collection of beautiful treasures that our children have made. Making your own decorations from up-cycled items, paper or natural materials is also a much more eco-friendly options compared to purchasing lots of mass produced plastic baubles.
We created these snowflakes from egg cartons and the end result is pretty durable so they should last for a few years!
MATERIALS:
- Egg cartons
- Sharp scissors
- Hole punch (optional)
- Paints
- Hot glue
- String
HOW TO:
To create these snowflakes you need to find egg cartons that have tall spike shapes in the middle. Not all cartons are the same so have a little hunt in your supermarket! To create 1 snowflake, you will need 10 spikes, which means 2 egg cartons. Carefully cut the spikes out and trim the edges into V shapes.
To add more detail to your snowflake, cut out diamond shapes in each edge and add extra holes with a hole punch.
Paint each of your egg carton snowflake sections in winter colours. We used acrylic paints as it covers the egg carton card well and doesn't make them too soggy. Paint the insides too.
Once the paint has dried, begin to assemble your snowflake using hot glue. Glue only the central point and the tip of each section together allowing a hole in the middle which creates more of a snowflake shape.
Before you glue the final piece together, glue in a loop of cord so you can hang your snowflake. Then glue the final 2 sections together.
