This is such a fun activity for little ones and super easy to make as it is just wrapping yarn around a stick. I love including natural elements in our crafts and gum nuts make the perfect antennae. There are so many cool bugs you could make, we particularly love making crazy caterpillars!
MATERIALS:
- Sticks and gum nuts or other seed pods
- Colourful yarn
- Pom poms
- Googly eyes
- Cardboard for wings
- Hot glue gun
- Masking tape
HOW TO:
To make the caterpillars, I attached the gum nuts to the stick with masking tape and tied on the yarn to secure in position. My little one then began wrapping the yarn around the stick to make the caterpillar body. To change colours, just tie on another colour yarn and continue wrapping. Once you have covered the stick making a nice colourful caterpillar, secure the end of the yarn with glue to prevent it from unraveling. You can then add pompoms and googly eyes with hot glue.
To make the centipede, I glued the small twigs onto the base stick first with hot glue to make the legs, then my little wrapped the yarn around to make the body. For the bugs with wings, we cut wing shapes out of cardboard and just attached them by wrapping yarn around.
