LOOSE PARTS CONSTRUCTION

Open ended play ideas

We have a huge selection of small, loose parts for construction, craft and play. With these constructions we didn't use any glue, we used things like blu tac, pegs, elastic bands and paper clips to join everything together. My 4yr old loves the immediacy of being able to build things on his own without having to wait for glue to dry or my help with the hot glue gun. This is a great activity that he keeps coming back to time and time again. Once we had finished building, all the constructions get taken apart so we can reuse the materials another day.

MATERIALS:

  • Items from your craft cupboard like wooden craft sticks, paper straws, pom poms, wooden blocks, googly eyes or cardboard scraps
  • Natural materials like twigs, pine cones, shells or seed pods
  • Items from your household recycling like bottle tops, bread tags or corks
  • Items to join everything together like blu tac, pegs, paper clips, bull dog clips and elastic bands

HOW TO:

Set out an interesting selection of materials and get making. If your little one seems stuck about where to start, you could offer an open-ended prompt like 'make something that moves', 'make an animal' or 'make a building' to get them started. Smaller children might need a hand with things like wrapping elastic bands to attach items. Here are a few examples of crazy constructions we have made recently.
