Mini Niches

Mini Niches

We love an art project that uses up-cycled materials. For this project we collected small fish tins and various lids to create our mini niches or frames.

In Mexico, a niche is a traditional, small, hand-made devotional shadow box or shrine, usually crafted from tin or wood to honor saints or loved ones. Popular in folk art, these dioramas often feature vibrant colors, paper flowers, sequins, and scenes for Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead).

HOW TO:

Make sure your tins and lids are properly cleaned and dry. Begin by lining the tins or lids with colourful paper using hot glue to secure the paper in place.

Add decorations around the edges of your mini niches using pom poms, ribbon, cord, beads, sequins, paper flowers; anything that is colourful and decorative will do. You can attach the items to the tins or lids using hot glue.

Now it's time to make some artwork to go inside your frames. You could use photos of loved ones, drawings or use images from our Frida Kahlo printable activity sheets.

We coloured in a portrait of Frida, Dia de Muertos skulls and flowers to put in our frames.

Add a loop of cord or ribbon at the top so you can hang up your niches.

Happy crafting friends!
