HOT ROCKS & WAX CRAYONS

Decorated rocks using melted wax crayons

This is a really simple activity but it's so much fun! My 6yr old has asked me over and over again to decorate more rocks. We now have lots of colourful pebbles all around our garden!

Yes, there is an element of risk in giving your children hot rocks to decorate but the rock aren't hot enough to cause any real damage and I feel it's really important to present you children with activities that have an element of risk so they can make their own assessments of what is safe and learn how to handle items carefully.

MATERIALS:

  • Smooth pebbles
  • Wax crayons
  • A piece of scrap cardboard to put your rocks on

HOW TO:

Pop you rocks onto a baking tray and put them in the oven to heat up, I left ours in for about 10min at 180 degrees C. Carefully remove the rock from the oven and place onto a scrap piece of cardboard. (So you don't get melted crayon all over your table!) Using wax crayons, decorate the rocks. The heat from the rocks will melt the crayon onto the rock making pretty patterns.
