Gum Nut People
Since moving to Australia from the UK 12 years ago now, I still love exploring all the beautiful native plants and wildlife Australia has to offer. They seem so exotic and interesting to me. I get excited when I see kangaroos hopping around the paddock next to our house. My kids, having been born here, are just like 'yep it's another Kangaroo mum' but I'm there with my nose glued to the window!
Australia has the best selection of crazy gum nuts and seed pods that are fantastic for crafting with. I get excited when I find giant gum nuts or beautiful banksia seed pods. We made these crazy little aliens using different seed pods and wooden beads. If you don't live in Australia, just get creative with what ever natural resources you can find.
MATERIALS:
- Seed pods
- Wooden beads
- Colourful yarn
- Acrylic paints and brushes
- Pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Permanent marker pens
- Hot glue gun
HOW TO:
Begin by painting your seed pods with acrylic paints. We did a couple of coats to give really solid colour.

Next make yarn tassels for your crazy creatures hair. To make the tassels, wrap the yarn around your hand to make a bundle and tie to secure in the middle. Cut the loops of yarn to make tassels. Then fold the tassel in half and glue into the top of the gum nuts.

Glue on googly eyes and draw faces onto the gum nuts.

Now assemble you gun nut creatures using pipe cleaners to make arms and legs and large wooden beads for the bodies.

Happy crafting friends!
