This is one of the projects from our favourite children's art activity book DRAWING WORKSHOP for KIDS by Samara Caughey. Through 25 engaging activities, the book explores drawing from life, drawing from images, and inventive drawing. Each project focuses on different techniques such as observation, mark making, shadow, line, composition, detail, contour, and perspective.
For this project we use wax crayons and liquid water colour paints, but you could use any drawing or colouring materials you have available like chalk pastels, oil pastels, water colours paints, coloured pencils or pens.
MATERIALS:
- Water colour paper
- Feathers
- Drawing and colouring materials like watercolour paints, liquid watercolours, wax crayons, oil pastels, colouring pencils or coloured markers.
- A cardboard lid or small box
- Coloured paper to collage
- Glue
- Scissors
HOW TO:
Set out your selection of drawing and colouring materials along with some feathers for observational drawing. We used watercolour paper for our feather paintings which we made with wax crayons and liquid watercolour paints.
In the book Drawing Workshop for Kids author Samara Caughey talks eloquently about how to set up the projects and how to talk to children about their art without taking over and dictating the process to them. We love this book and I couldn't recommend it enough!
Whilst our feather paintings were drying we decorated a cardboard box lid with colourful patterned paper. If you don't have any pretty paper available you could paint your box instead. Once dried I helped my little one to cut out her feathers and she arranged them in the box lid to make our beautiful piece of art.
