COLLAGE CAPES

This is one of our most favourite projects we have tried from the awesome book COLLAGE WORKSHOP for KIDS by Shannon Merenstein.
Collage Workshop is such a fantastic book, each chapter of the book explores a different art theme including nature, faces, construction, contrast, wearables and storytelling. The projects within each chapter demonstrate how to work with a large variety of collage materials to produce beautiful, process art based collage creations. We have tried so many projects from the book and the kids have loved them all. These capes we created have now gone into out fancy dress costume box and come out at regular occasions to be worn again.
MATERIALS:
- Cotton fabric
- Other fabric scraps like felt, faux flowers or patterned fabric.
- Fabric dye, fabric pens, inks or paints - anything that you can use to colour your cotton fabric.
- Ribbon
- Fringe trim (optional)
- Hot glue
- Sewing needle and thread or sewing machine
HOW TO:
Cut the cotton fabric to form a cape shape. Now it's time to get creative and decorate your cape base. You could try tie dying it with fabric dye, painting onto the fabric with inks or using fabric pens to draw onto the fabric. We decorated our capes using liquid watercolour inks. To help the ink flow into the fabric better we washed it with soap first and applied the inks while the fabric was still wet.
