Cardboard flowers

Cardboard flowers

If you have been hanging around Mini Mad Things for a while, you will already know we love making crafts from cardboard and up-cycled materials. I find there is something very freeing for children when approaching a 'junk' materials, like and old cardboard box, rather that a pristine piece of white paper. The perceived lack of preciousness of the cardboard allows creativity to flow without worrying about 'making mistakes'.

For this project, we used old cardboard boxes to cut petals and construct flowers. Our flowers were quite big but it would be awesome to go huge and create giant, paint-covered, colourful flowers!

MATERIALS:

  • Old cardboard boxes
  • Glue
  • Masking tape
  • Craft knife and scissors
  • Colouring materials like paints or oil pastels
  • Collage materials like scraps of colourful paper or pom-poms
  • Yayoi Kusama printable template

HOW TO:

Begin by cutting out petal shapes and a circle for the middle of your flower from the cardboard box. Go as big as you can. We used a craft knife to cut the card easily.

If you would like to create a 3D flower shape, you can use the flower template which is part of our Yayoi Kusama printable actiovity sheets.

Build your flower using glue and masking tape to secure the petals together.

Next, begin adding colour. We used paint first, then once the paint had dried, added details with oil pastels and collage paper.

Happy crafting friends!
