BOOK REVIEW: Art Workshop for Children
I have long been a huge fan of the beautiful children's art activity projects Barbara Rucci creates for her blog ART BAR, so getting a copy of her book ART WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN was a must. I have to say I was not disappointed, the book is full of beautiful open-ended art project ideas just like her wonderful blog.

Art Workshop for Children is not just another book of straightforward art projects. The book's unique child-led approach provides a framework for cultivating creative thinking and encourages the wonder that comes when children are allowed to freely explore the creative process and their materials. As children work through these open-ended workshops, adults are guided on how to be facilitators who provide questions, encourage deep thinking, and help spark an excitement for discovery.
I love that all the projects in the book use simple art supplies. The book progresses from simple, open-ended creative invitations using 2 or 3 materials to more involved workshops introducing a broader range of skills and materials. Most of the projects are suitable to preschool-aged children, however the book offers ideas for explorations and new twists to engage older or more experienced artists.
Inspired by this beautiful book, we have added a few new materials to our art supply cupboard including liquid water colours (which are so vibrant and beautiful). Allowing my children to explore these new materials has broadened their creative skills.
We have tried so many of the project ideas from the book and they have all been a big hit with my children. We particularly loved the simple mini water colour paintings, wax crayon and liquid water colours and cardboard collage portraits projects. My little one really loved making these beautiful heart hangers (pictured below) and they are now decorating her bunk bed.
This book is SO MUCH MORE than just a kids art activity book. Interspersed throughout the book are essays by Betsy Mckenna that introduce perspectives on mess-making, imperfection, the role of adult, collaborative art, and thoughts on the Reggio Emilia teaching method; a self-guided teaching philosophy. The books also includes fantastic ideas for creating and creative space at home for your little ones and ideas of how to display your children's art.
Both myself and my children LOVE this book and I'm sure you will love it too. It is full of beautiful, inspiring images and fantastic project ideas to spark your little ones creativity. The essays included in the book also provide parents with a deeper dive into ideas around creativity and learning.
So, to summarize, the book includes:
- More than 25 process art project ideas created using simple art & craft supplies.
- Inspiration for creating a creative space at home for your little ones and ways of displaying artwork.
- Art materials supply lists.
- Essays by Betsy Mckenna exploring the Reggio Emilia teaching method and creativity.
- 176 pages of beautiful, full colour images.
- Activities suitable for ages 3+
